Assassin’s Creed Celebrates American Revolution with Interactive AR Experiences

Assassin’s Creed is marking the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution with two interactive augmented reality (AR) apps, allowing players to immerse themselves in the historical landscapes of Boston and New York. Titled Echoes of Revolution, these free XR experiences are designed to bring pivotal moments of the Revolutionary War to life.

Visitors in New York and Boston can engage with the past through Echoes of Revolution, which offers a 90-minute exploration of 10 location-based memories. Using their mobile devices, players can access AR content that visualizes what 18th-century New York and Boston looked like during the revolution.

In New York City, the experience will guide players through significant events such as the defense of the Hudson and the toppling of King George’s statue at Bowling Green. “New York City has long deserved a ‘freedom trail’ to spotlight its centrality in the American Revolution,” said Peter Aigner, Director of The Gotham Center for New York City History.

Meanwhile, the Boston experience, developed with Revolutionary Spaces, will allow users to witness key moments like the Boston Tea Party and the intelligence networks at the Green Dragon Tavern. Matthew Wilding, Senior Director of Interpretation and Future Planning at Revolutionary Spaces, expressed enthusiasm for engaging new audiences with Boston’s revolutionary history.

These apps were created by Sugar Creative in partnership with Ubisoft and utilize Niantic Spatial’s visual positioning technology to enhance the interactive experience.

In addition to the AR apps, The Museum of the City of New York is hosting The Occupied City, a major exhibition that explores New York’s lesser-known role in the Revolutionary War. This exhibit features immersive videos created using the world of Assassin’s Creed III, allowing visitors to visualize Revolutionary New York as it was during the conflict.

“One of the most remarkable aspects of The Occupied City exhibition is the opportunity for visitors to experience Revolutionary New York through Assassin’s Creed III,” said Ted Knudsen, a professor of History at CUNY Queens College. The exhibition aims to provide a vivid representation of a city that no longer exists, showcasing its streets and buildings as they were in the 18th century.

For those looking to further explore the American Revolution through the Assassin’s Creed lens, both Assassin’s Creed III Remastered and Assassin’s Creed Rogue are available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via the Ubisoft Store, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Players can also access these titles through a Ubisoft+ subscription.
