Reforj Unveils Major Visual Overhaul with Title Update 8

Reforj has announced Title Update 8, marking a significant milestone in the game's development with a complete visual overhaul powered by a new technology called Rixels. This update, the result of six months of dedicated work by the art and engineering teams, promises to enhance the game's aesthetic appeal while improving performance.

The introduction of Rixels represents a shift from traditional pixel art to a more versatile system. Unlike standard pixels, which are limited to square shapes, Rixels can take on up to 23 unique shapes, each with distinct material properties. This innovation allows for sharper, cleaner visuals that maintain the charm and readability players have come to love.

The need for this transformation arose from challenges faced by voxel-style games, particularly in rendering diagonal lines and fine details. The previous faceted art style often resulted in fuzzy or inconsistent visuals. By integrating vector-inspired techniques with custom geometric block shapes, the development team has created a solution that not only improves technical performance but also establishes a new artistic direction for Reforj.

Every aspect of the game, from environmental textures to characters and mobs, has been enhanced by this new technology. Players will notice the difference whether they are revisiting familiar locations or exploring Reforj for the first time.

Beyond aesthetics, Rixels significantly reduce storage requirements. Previously, a single texture could take up to 4MB, but with Rixels, that same texture can now be represented in approximately 72KB, resulting in a 98.2% reduction in storage needs. This efficiency opens up new possibilities for content creation and experimentation, allowing the team to explore ideas that were previously impractical.

Players interested in experiencing these changes can join the preview through the XBOX Insider Hub. To participate, players need to sign in on their XBOX Series X|S console, navigate to Previews > Reforj, and select Join. After completing registration, they will be redirected to the Store to install Reforj Pre-Alpha. A reboot of the console is recommended to ensure the latest build is received.
