Synaptic Simulations Launches A220 Airliner for Microsoft Flight Simulator

Earlier this week, Synaptic Simulations, a team of young developers, launched their first product on the Microsoft Flight Simulator Marketplace: the A220 Airliner. This modern jet airliner has been highly anticipated by aviation enthusiasts and represents a significant milestone for the developers, who are only a few years out of high school.

The A220 Airliner is notable for its complexity and fidelity, showcasing the team's dedication to creating a high-quality simulation experience. Synaptic Simulations emerged from the freeware scene, and their journey to develop such a sophisticated aircraft as their first professional release is being celebrated as a Cinderella story.

In a recent interview, the Synaptic team shared insights into their development process. The team consists of eight members, including a CEO and art manager, a lead systems programmer, and a lead avionics programmer. They initially met through a community-led freeware initiative and formed a core group committed to bringing the A220 to life.

Despite their youth, the developers have pursued degrees in engineering and computer science, with their passion for flight simulation driving them to create add-ons. They recognized a gap in the market for a high-fidelity A220 simulation, which motivated them to tackle the ambitious project.

To enhance the A220's development, Synaptic Simulations partnered with iniBuilds, a well-known name in flight simulation. iniBuilds provided essential resources, including production support, texturing artwork, and a custom sound package, ensuring a polished experience for users.

Among the unique features of the A220 are its distinctive exterior and cockpit design, a 3D terrain map, and an advanced graphical flight-planning system. The aircraft also includes interactive circuit breakers and a soundscape that captures the A220 engine's signature “whale howl.” These elements contribute to a rich and immersive flying experience.

The development process was not without challenges. The team faced a steep learning curve, requiring them to rebuild various aspects of the aircraft as their skills and understanding evolved. This iterative approach ultimately led to a more accurate and robust simulation.

As they celebrate the launch of the A220, the team is eager to see how the flight simulation community receives their work. They plan to continue supporting and expanding the A220 based on user feedback, ensuring it remains a valuable addition to Microsoft Flight Simulator.
